I’m delighted to share some wonderful news from the studio this week. One of my students has successfully passed her Grade 2 Guitar exam with a Merit, and it’s a result she can be extremely proud of.

When P. began working towards her Grade 2, one of the key focuses was improving her chord changes, timing and building her confidence. Through regular lessons, focused practice, and a positive attitude, she steadily developed both her technical skills and musical expression.

Pausing between chords is one of the most common challenges guitar students face. It’s usually not a lack of ability — it’s a lack of structure.

When students try to practise whole pieces from start to finish too early, the hands and brain don’t have time to catch up, and everything grinds to a halt.

Rather than trying to fix everything at once, we broke her practice down into small, focused sections.

We worked on:

• Short chord transitions instead of full songs

• Slow, controlled changes before increasing speed

• A clear weekly practice structure

• Supporting scales and theory to reinforce what she was playing

This approach removes overwhelm and helps progress feel achievable.

One of the biggest changes wasn’t just technical — it was confidence.

As the pauses disappeared, her playing became calmer and more assured. She stopped second-guessing herself and started enjoying the music again, which is exactly what exams (and music!) should be about.

What impressed me most during this journey was her perseverance and dedictaion to everything she undertook during and outside of lessons. These qualities not only helped her succeed in the exam but will continue to support her growth as a musician.

Achieving a Merit at Grade 2 is a fantastic accomplishment and a strong foundation for future progress. Congratulations to P. on this well-deserved success – I’m really looking forward to what comes next in her musical journey.
